We Listen, We Don’t Judge…The Internet, However, Has Receipts

Updated: Dec 23, 2024

We Listen, We Don’t Judge

The latest viral social media trend, "We Listen, We Don’t Judge" feels like a warm hug from the internet. It’s a space where people share their truths, experiences, and confessions under the promise of zero judgment. Sounds wholesome, right? Well, it is - on the surface.

Now, I know you must be thinking, "Why does she care? Can't we just enjoy a harmless trend without a cybersecurity lecture?" Trust me, I wish that were the case. But my job - and my passion - is to make sure you’re aware of the hidden risks lurking behind these seemingly innocent internet moments. Because while the trend may promise no judgment, the internet is a different story. It keeps receipts, and those receipts can show up when you least expect them.

When Vulnerability Meets the Internet

Sharing your deepest thoughts in a public forum feels cathartic, but the digital world isn’t your therapist. Every comment, story, or confession you post becomes part of your digital footprint - a trail that’s not only public but also permanent.

Here’s why you should think twice before spilling your heart online:

  1. Screenshots Last Forever It doesn’t matter if the original post gets deleted. Someone, somewhere, might have already taken a screenshot. Whether it’s an innocent overshare or something deeply personal, once it’s out there, it’s no longer under your control.

  2. The Perfect Playground for Scammers Cybercriminals are experts at piecing together information. Your heartfelt confession about your childhood pet? That might just help them guess your security question. The story about your financial struggles? A scammer now knows you’re a prime target for a “too good to be true” loan offer.

  3. Judgment-Free Doesn’t Mean Risk-Free Even if no one explicitly judges your post, it doesn’t mean they won’t use it. Employers, universities, or even nosy neighbors could stumble across your shared secrets, forming opinions - or worse, decisions - based on what they find.

  4. Your Kids Might Find It One Day Think about the long-term. If you’re sharing sensitive family details, remember that today’s adorable story could be tomorrow’s awkward discovery for your child (or even a weapon for cyberbullies).

How to Participate Safely (If You Must)

If you can’t resist jumping on the bandwagon, here are some tips to protect yourself:

  1. Stay Anonymous Use generic details and avoid sharing anything that could identify you or your loved ones.

  2. Think Before You Post Ask yourself: Would I be okay with this being public forever? If the answer is no, keep it offline.

  3. Use Private Channels If you really need to vent, consider messaging a trusted friend or using a secure app designed for confidential conversations.

  4. Don’t Share PII (Personally Identifiable Information) Even minor details, like your first pet’s name, your birthday, or where you grew up, can be used by cybercriminals to impersonate you.

Closing Thoughts

Vulnerability is powerful - it connects us, fosters understanding, and builds communities. But in the vast, unforgiving world of the internet, it’s vital to balance openness with caution. Remember, what feels like a safe space today could turn into tomorrow’s cautionary tale.

Before you share, take a moment to pause and think: Does this truly belong online, or is it better reserved for a trusted circle offline? Your story matters, but so does your safety.

We listen, we don’t judge - because judgment is easy, but protecting your digital well-being is what truly matters.
