The Secret Life of Your Data: What Families Should Know About Online Privacy

Updated: Feb 7

A laptop displaying 'DATA PRIVACY' sits on a desk with office supplies, a clock, and a corkboard, symbolizing digital security and data protection.

Hey there, welcome back from the long week! I don’t know about you, but sometimes, by the time Friday rolls around, I feel like my brain needs a factory reset. Between work, school, errands, and trying to remember a dozen passwords, it’s a lot. And let’s be honest—who actually remembers all their passwords anyway? (If you just said, "I use the same one for everything"…we need to talk!)

This week was Data Privacy Week, a reminder that while we’re watching, scrolling, and shopping, our data is often on a journey of its own. But here’s the thing: privacy isn’t just something to think about once a year. It’s an everyday habit, just like locking the front door at night.

So, let’s talk about it. No scare tactics, no technical jargon—just a real conversation about where your family’s data goes and how you can take back some control.

How Your Family’s Data Gets Collected

Think about how often your family uses devices throughout the day. Here are just a few ways data gets collected behind the scenes:

  • Apps & Games – Many free apps track your location, browsing habits, and even microphone activity.

  • Social Media & Streaming Services – These platforms build detailed profiles based on what you watch, like, and share.

  • Smart Home Devices – Voice assistants, smart TVs, and even baby monitors can store recordings or behavior patterns.

  • Online Shopping & Subscriptions – Websites track your purchases, searches, and how long you spend on a page.

  • Schools & Learning Apps – Many educational platforms store student data, including names, progress, and sometimes even biometric data.

Sounds like a lot, right? But here’s the good news—you don’t have to be a cybersecurity expert to protect your family’s privacy. Small, simple steps can make a big difference.

5 Ways to Protect Your Family’s Privacy
  1. Do a Quick Privacy Check Together Set aside 10 minutes with your kids to go through app and device settings. Turn off unnecessary tracking (like location sharing or microphone access). Make it a fun challenge—who can find the sneakiest permission?

  2. Strengthen Your Password Game No more “123456” or “password”! Help your family create strong, unique passwords using a fun phrase only they would know. Example: "JjajjaBakes99Cookies!". Even better—use a password manager to keep track.

  3. Teach the “Billboard Rule” for Sharing Online Before posting anything online, ask: Would I be okay if this were on a giant billboard for everyone to see? If not, it’s probably better to keep it private.

  4. Think Twice Before Downloading “Free” Apps Many free apps aren’t really free—they make money by selling user data. Check what permissions an app asks for before downloading. If a flashlight app wants access to your contacts, that’s a red flag!

  5. Talk About Online Scams & Suspicious Links Scammers love to target families with fake emails, texts, and pop-ups. A simple family rule: Stop, Think, and Ask. If something looks off, don’t click—check with a parent first.

The Takeaway: Privacy Starts at Home

I know privacy settings aren’t the most exciting thing on the to-do list. But here’s the reality—our data is valuable, and protecting it doesn’t have to be complicated. Small habits, like reviewing settings, being mindful of what we share, and staying alert for scams, can go a long way.

So, even though Data Privacy Week is over, let’s keep the conversation going. What’s one privacy habit your family can start today? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
