Are Your Apps More Clingy Than Your Ex? Stop Them from Tracking You!

đ¶ "Valentine's is coming. Where is your privacy!? You're being tracked in real-timeâby your own phone!... Abena, Abena, Abena, Abena.." đ¶
Ah, Valentine's Day. A time for love, chocolates, and that viral song reminding everyone that Valentineâs is coming⊠but instead of asking where your boyfriend is, letâs ask: Where is your privacy?
But instead of heart-shaped chocolates, letâs talk about the apps that seem way too invested in your every move. While some people are busy celebrating romance, your phone might be showering you with something elseâunwanted attention. Thatâs right, many apps are tracking your location, listening to your microphone, and collecting all kinds of personal data without you even realizing it. Sound familiar? Like an ex who just wonât move on?
So, if youâre ready to break up with unnecessary tracking, letâs talk about how to reclaim your digital privacy.
First, Letâs Talk About Location Stalking
Ever notice how some apps seem to know where you are all the time? Itâs not magicâitâs just excessive tracking. Shopping apps, weather apps, even some dating appsâmany of them have access to your location, even when youâre not using them. Thatâs kind of like someone showing up at your favorite cafĂ© uninvited just because they knew youâd be there. Creepy, right?
The good news? You can take control. Dive into your phone settings and shut that down. On iPhones, it's under Privacy & Security > Location Services. Android users, you can find it in Settings > Location > App Permissions. If an app doesnât need your location to function, cut it off. Simple.
Microphone Eavesdropping â Are Your Apps Listening to You?
Ever had a casual conversation about, say, getting a new MacBook or that dream luxury ride, and suddenly your social media is flooded with ads for MacBooks and high-end cars? Itâs not paranoiaâsome apps do have access to your microphone, and theyâre using it to serve you targeted ads. If an app doesnât need mic access (looking at you, random shopping app), revoke its permissions.
Go ahead and check which apps are quietly listening in. On iPhone, visit Privacy & Security > Microphone. Android users, go to Privacy > Permission Manager > Microphone. If it doesnât make sense for an app to have mic access, switch it off. Want extra protection? Consider a hardware mic blocker or even an old-school piece of tape. Problem solved.
But Wait, Thereâs More: Apps and Websites Love Collecting Your Data
Itâs not just appsâwebsites are just as guilty. Have you ever wondered how that one pair of shoes you almost bought follows you around the internet? Websites track your activity with cookies, pixels, and fingerprinting, making sure they know what youâre up to.
The fix? A privacy-friendly browser like Brave or Firefox, and maybe an ad-blocker like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger. If youâre using Chrome, at the very least, go into Settings > Privacy and Security and block third-party cookies. Every little bit helps.
WiFi and Bluetooth â The Invisible Trackers
Even when you're not actively connected to a network, your phone might still be sending out signals, looking for WiFi and Bluetooth connections. These signals can be used to track your movements without you even realizing it. Ever been in a store and suddenly received a notification for a special deal? Thatâs how they do it.
To stop this, turn off WiFi scanning and Bluetooth when youâre not using them. On both iPhone and Android, these settings can be found under WiFi & Bluetooth. If you donât need it on, turn it off.
Breaking Up with Big Techâs Tracking
Big Tech loves knowing everything about youâwhat you search for, where you go, what you buy. Google, Facebook, and others have entire profiles on your habits.
If that doesnât sit right with you, itâs time to take back some control. Consider switching to privacy-focused alternativesâDuckDuckGo instead of Google, ProtonMail instead of Gmail. Also, go into your Google settings (myactivity.google.com) and see exactly what theyâve been collecting. You might be surprised.
Final Thought: Set Boundaries with Your Digital Life
Just like in real relationships, healthy boundaries are key. If an app is demanding too much information, take a step back and ask: Do you really need this access? If the answer is no, revoke it.
So, this Valentineâs Day, whether youâre celebrating love or enjoying your single life, make sure youâre not in a toxic relationship with your phone. Because the only thing clingier than an ex⊠is an app that just wonât stop tracking you.
